Dizziness in Pregnancy – Causes and Tips to Keep it Away

That sudden feeling of being weak and faint, then grabbing onto anything for support… Dizziness strikes again! Pregnancy dizziness is a normal symptom, particularly in the first trimester. Let’s get to know what causes it and what you can do to ease this symptom.

What Causes the Dizzies?

What else could be the cause but hormones? Dizziness commonly occurs during the first trimester, when your body is adjusting to those crazy hormone levels. Progesterone, the main hormone that peaks during pregnancy, causes an increased blood flow to your baby. As a result, however, blood returns more slowly to you. This results in a lower blood pressure and reduced blood flow to your brain. Such an occurrence causes you to feel faint and dizzy.

Another culprit for dizziness could be low blood sugar levels. It can take some time for your body to adapt to changes in metabolism. If you’re anemic, you can have a higher risk for feeling dizzy as well.

As your tummy grows bigger, it can place pressure on nearby blood vessels. This can restrict blood flow as well, causing you to feel faint. The same thing can happen when lying on your back. This position causes the weight of the baby to push down on a major vein.

Though a lot of factors can cause dizziness, there are things you can do to prevent it.

What you Can do to Prevent Pregnancy Dizziness

Here are some things you can do to keep bouts of dizziness at a minimum:

  • Get up slowly when standing from a lying or sitting position. Make sure to hold onto something for support in case you suddenly feel lightheaded.
  • Don’t stay standing for a long time. If it’s a must, rotate your feet in circular motions to encourage circulation.
  • Avoid getting too hungry before eating something. Don’t go too long without a meal or snack. Keep some easy snacks ready so you can munch when needed.
  • Try to avoid hot baths as they can make it more difficult for blood to flow back from your legs.
  • Don’t sleep on your back especially when you’re in your second and third trimester. The baby’s weight can obstruct blood flow. What’s more, lying on your back at this stage can be quite uncomfortable.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict blood flow.
  • Up your iron intake, especially if you’re anemic or are prone to anemia.( You can use Over-The-Counter iron medication for pregnant)
  • Avoid staying too long in a hot, stuffy room or under the sun.
  • Drink lots of water.

What to Do if you’re Feeling Faint

If you feel the dizziness coming, here are a few things you can do to relieve the faintness:

  • Stop and sit or lie down to lower your head to promote blood flow to the area
  • Take deep, calming breaths
  • If you’re wearing any tight clothing, loosen the item
  • Drink a glass of water
  • Sit next to a window and allow cool, circulating air to fill the room

If dizziness gets too severe or happens too often, it’s best to talk with your doctor. This can help determine if it’s due to conditions like anemia, hypertension, or other disorders.
