Are there over-the-counter medications for insomnia?

Some medications for insomnia can cause a high degree of dependence if you take them regularly. This can get to a point when you can no longer sleep if you don’t take your medications. Valerian

Valerian, from the root of Valeriana officinalis plant, contains substances that help promote sleep. It’s an herbal supplement that is quite effective and is a great natural alternative to medications for insomnia.

Melatonin

This hormone-based supplement aids in improving your natural sleep and wake cycle. It helps boost the quality of sleep, making you feel well-rested. It’s a great supplement for those who have difficulty staying asleep.

Doxylamine succinate

Doxylamine is actually an anti-allergy medication that causes sleepiness as a side effect. It could be helpful on occasions when you truly need to sleep but can’t.

Diphenhydramine

This is a similar medication to doxylamine succinate. It’s typically used for allergy but can make you really drowsy. Note that other side effects are urine retention, constipation, blurred vision and dry mouth. Thus, it’s best to take only once in a while.

Treating insomnia doesn’t only involve taking supplements or medications. It’s also a great idea to improve sleep hygiene. This means that you have to keep your bedroom very relaxing. Keep it dim, clean, cool and comfortable. Plus, avoid stimulating activities like using gadgets or watching TV in bed.

In instances that sleep hygiene is not sufficient to help you get those extra zzzs, you may want to try out approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia. In a nutshell, this type of treatment approach capitalizes on a set of habits that you can incorporate from therapy sessions over time.

You can try various methods and see what works for you. Remember, it’s still best to use medications sparingly. And, it may be worth trying to improve your sleeping habits before anything else!
